Debbie Democrat and Ronnie Republican sat together on the couch in the counsellor\u2019s office. They were both a bit nervous but were smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, what brings you here today?\u201d the gray-haired chubby man asked. His bushy eyebrows danced above and between his profuse ear hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debbie offered, \u201cWe want to adopt a baby and the agency suggested we have your counsel, given our um, unique situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eyebrows danced again. \u201cUnique?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ron rolled his eyes, but Debbie smiled. \u201cThey ask on the application forms for party affiliation now, you know, since our times can be so bitter. And it turns out we are, um, different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here the eyebrows dived. \u201cAnd just how are you two different, party wise?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ron smiled but his voice was biting. \u201cCan\u2019t you see, doc? I\u2019m a Republican, and she\u2019s a Democrat! It\u2019s obvious to our friends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His eyebrows furrowed deeper, and he let out a long sigh. \u201cAnd you want to bring a child into this tortured environment? Most the couples I meet with your problem are wanting a divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ron snorted. \u201cSee Deb, I told you what he\u2019d say.\u201d Debbie smiled and laughed. Ron now sneered, \u201cYou snobs are all the same.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here the eyebrows shot up and his chubby cheeks flushed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debbie giggled and said softly to the counsellor \u201cDon\u2019t let him get to you. He tries to get everybody mad. That\u2019s just his way.\u201d She shot a hand over and squeezed Ronnie\u2019s forearm. \u201cWe don\u2019t know if he\u2019s a snob, Ron.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHell, I can see he\u2019s a snob by those diplomas he\u2019s got hangin\u2019 there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The counsellor sat up straight. \u201cI\u2019ll let you know I attended-\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debbie cut him off. \u201cRon is a journeyman plumber, and he would be a wonderful father. He can poke you buttons though if you let him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eyebrows softened and he settled down again into his well cushioned chair. He took a breath and asked Deb, \u201cAnd what do you do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI work at the Public Radio station.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The counsellor nodded and jotted a note. The eyebrows shot up and he looked at them both squarely. \u201cDon\u2019t you have arguments?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here Debbie flushed and Ron rolled the eyes again. \u201cOf course we do. He doesn\u2019t rinse the dishes before he puts them in the dishwasher and it dries me crazy. But what couple doesn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI mean about politics. How can you share the same home?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ron took a deep breath. Debbie looked down at her hands. Ron started. \u201cIt\u2019s like this doc. I know I\u2019m right. And she thinks she\u2019s right. And we talk about things, but we know, in the end we want to make a good home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debbie added. \u201cWe understand that our differences aren\u2019t as important as our love for our home and our marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The counsellor leaned forward. \u201cDon\u2019t you argue over the last election? Stolen? Insurrection? Voter fraud? Authoritarianism?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ron whirled over to Deb. \u201cSee, I told you, this jerk was just going to try to get us fighting!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debbie laughed. \u201cYeah, you did say that. Maybe he is.\u201d And she turned to the counsellor with a twinkle. \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t want to do that now would you?\u201d The counsellor thought she might have winked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eyebrows cleared his throat. \u201cIt is critical that you both understand the enormous obstacles your child, should you proceed with this adoption, will face. We live in times where trust is broken, where the political parties are almost at war with each other. How can a child thrive in such an environment?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ron threw his head back and exhaled, like he did when the other guy made a tough shot on the eight ball. Debbie winced and her smile dropped to a straight line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOf course we know that doc. We don\u2019t need you tellin\u2019 us that.\u201d Then he reached his hand out and touched Deb\u2019s arm. \u201cBut this woman will be the best momma in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
