The rudder really is banged up<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve been plugging away at writing this column for over\nthree years now so I thought I\u2019d take a break. There will be no column this\nweek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially I\u2019d thought, since we are nearing the primary\nelection, I could say something about Idaho politics, but honestly, what\u2019s the\npoint? It\u2019s the same old story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have the super-majority Idaho Republicans crowded into\ntheir big tent arguing over who really represents the conservative values of\nIdahoans. There are so many in the tent they can\u2019t all see each other, hear\neach other, let alone know each other. They can\u2019t even agree on what to eat, so\nthey keep taking a bite out of each other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, both remaining Idaho Democrats are sitting\noutside at a picnic table looking at the noisy tent trying to figure who will\npay for their lunch. The baloney sandwiches weren\u2019t free. There\u2019s no news here\nfolks, so I will pass on Idaho politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I try to focus on Idaho healthcare issues but this pandemic\nis perplexing, so there\u2019s no point writing a column about that. Once we know if\nit was just a bad flu or truly the apocalypse, we\u2019ll think we know what we\nshould have done different. But that could be years from now. I choose not to\nspeculate at the moment, so I have decided not to write a column this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s no news that the natives are getting restless, as\nnatives should, about what authorities are telling us to do. After all, who put\nthem in charge? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least our wise representatives in Washington DC have\ndecided we all need a check in the mail. They fired up the presses at the\nTreasury and printed them up pretty fast, didn\u2019t they? I haven\u2019t got mine yet,\nbut I\u2019m comforted knowing it might come soon, so I can\u2019t really write about\nthat. I\u2019ll let you know. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, most of us are staying home and wondering\nwhere all those spider webs came from. I really have noticed a lot of spider\nwebs, but who wants to read about spider webs? So, I won\u2019t write a column this\nweek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there\u2019s no point sharing all the projects I\u2019ve been\nputtering on. Yours are probably more interesting. I got the 1949 Chevy dump\ntruck running like a champ, but I can\u2019t haul the roof I need to tear off to the\ndump. It\u2019s closed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, I fixed up an old lawnmower a neighbor left me. I\u2019m now\nblessed with four lawnmowers. See why I shouldn\u2019t write about how I\u2019ve been\nfilling my time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is one thing I\u2019ve put off for quite a while that I am\ntackling now in all this isolation. It\u2019s not really much of a story. I have\nthis old wooden sailboat that takes more time to keep shipshape than it spends\nin the water; kind of like our government. I\u2019ve sanded and varnished and\npatched and replaced more than I can list. That too, sounds like this Republic.\n It has really big sails and it can go\nreally fast with the right wind, but right now it\u2019s in storage, also like our\ncountry. I can get it out in a couple weeks. See, there\u2019s not really a story\nhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right now, I\u2019m fixing the rudder. It was really dinged up\nand cracked. The third coat of varnish is drying now, and it\u2019s really quite\nattractive. The image of a beautiful rudder for a boat that doesn\u2019t sail\nsomehow resonates with me right now. But like I said, it\u2019s not a story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, to all my readers I apologize for not doing a column\nthis week. We suffer in these troublesome times, socially distanced and worried\nabout the plague upon us.
