Alexander Hamilton was waiting for James Madison at the\ncrowded sports bar. He sipped his pint and barely noted the many screens\nshowing the many games. He frowned at the ring his glass had left on the\ncounter, lost in thought. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madison clapped him on the shoulder. \u201cSo, is it your turn or\nmine, Mr. Hamilton?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI suppose it is me, Mr. Madison, since Jay did the last one\nand yours was prior.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madison laughed. \u201cNo, Alexander, I meant who was to pay for\nthe ale. Since you have offered, I\u2019ll order two.\u201d He motioned for the ale\nwench. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell aren\u2019t you two a little late for Halloween?\u201d she\ngrinned at them, appreciating the white wigs and knee breeches. \u201cWhat can I\ngetcha?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTwo pints of your best ale, ma\u2019am. And see if you can lift\nthis poor man\u2019s spirits.\u201d He again clapped Hamilton\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She frowned, \u201cWhat is the problem, sweetheart?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamilton sighed deeply. \u201cAlas, I must convince the New\nYorkers that the Senate is the proper body to judge impeachment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She wiped at Hamilton\u2019s wet ring spot and asked, \u201cSo, what\nhave you been watching, CNN or Fox?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMadam, I assure you, we have no time for the hunt or\nfishing. We are trying to save this Constitution we have fought so hard for.\u201d\nHe turned to Jimmy Madison. \u201cSo, will this be the 65th<\/sup>?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madison mumbled \u201cThereabouts\u201d and licked his dry lips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, I get it!\u201d she burst into laughter. \u201cYou guys are\nacting as if you\u2019re Hamilton and Madison and you are worried over writing those\nFederalist Papers. What a hoot!\u201d She bustled off for the ale. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alex and Jimmy leaned toward each other. \u201cHow did she know\nwe were Federalists? Don\u2019t Republicans look the same?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, forget it. We have work. How do you propose to\nconvince?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamilton adopted his oratorical posture. \u201cThe Senate will\nhold the mantle since it will be the most august body of learned men, sworn to\nprotect the Constitution and defend the Republic. They will be appointed by the\nlegislatures and each state\u2019s properly elected body will only choose men of the\nhighest character, not swayed by self-interest or subject to partisan\ninfluence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bearded man with a MAGA hat looked over and laughed. \u201cI\nsure as hell hope not.\u201d He raised his glass to them. \u201cWe need our President\ndefended from those lousy Democrats. They\u2019ve sworn to spit him out ever since\nhe was elected. It\u2019s the Democrats who want to overthrow our duly-elected\nPresident. It\u2019s a coup!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His buddy with a Seahawks T-shirt added, \u201cYou guys never\nheard of the 17th<\/sup> amendment?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jim and Alex shook their heads but smiled. \u201cIt gives me\ngreat comfort to know the Constitution might be so changed, tell me about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe dumped that legislative election of Senators way back.\nStates couldn\u2019t agree and seats sat vacant. Not to mention the rich guys buying\ntheir senate seats.\u201d The two shared a laugh at the patriots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ale wench brought the two pints for Madison. \u201cYou\nfigured it out yet? I read all those Papers in Law School.\u201d she said with a\ntwinkle, playing along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both the patriots laughed at her joke. \u201cMa\u2019am, the law is no\nplace for a woman. She is best suited for the house.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOr the Senate!\u201d she laughed back at them. \u201cYou guys are a\nreal hoot. You\u2019ve sure got the costumes and the characters down.\u201d Then she\nfrowned. \u201cHey, why don\u2019t you get a little relevant here? What would you guys\nsay about universal healthcare or gun rights?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MAGA hat and Seahawk jeered from the opposite table. \u201cThere\nyou go with your Democrat commie talk!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She smiled at the hecklers and asked, \u201cCan I get you guys a\nrefill?\u201d Then she turned to the patriots and murmured under her breath, \u201cWatch\nout for these Republicans. Alex, I mean it. Especially that Aaron Burr.\u201d And\nshe tilted her head back with a hearty laugh.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
