It was Wednesday and Blanche was already aching. Her back\nhurt when she bent down to put the roasts in the oven, her ankles and knees\nached as she stood and chopped, her shoulders were sore when she reached up for\nthe big pots stored up high. She\u2019d finished lunch and the hashers were gone, so\nit was just her making the dinner for the 45 fraternity boys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dennis had seemed worried as she left him this morning.\n\u201cWhat\u2019s bothering you grandson?\u201d He\u2019d make his lunch and catch the bus after\nshe left, but they always had breakfast together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI got a rash and it hurts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet me see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pulled up his shirt exposing a pink raised band across\nhis ribs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blanche had never seen anything like it. \u201cWe\u2019ll keep an eye\non it. Don\u2019t rub it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She left the trailer and got in her old sedan and drove to\nwork. But the worry added to her ache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young man Skip came into the kitchen all chipper. \u201cYou\ngot any apples? I want to take one for this long afternoon. I got lab until 6.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOver there in that bowl.\u201d Blanche was chopping celery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow you doing Blanche?\u201d Skip had apologized to her before\nand seemed to be a kind young man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, my grandson has a rash and I can\u2019t afford to take him\nto the doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip frowned. \u201cYou don\u2019t have health insurance?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, we don\u2019t. Can\u2019t afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip frowned. \u201cWe could Google it.\u201d Blanche chuckled and\nshook her head. \u201cNo, really, it\u2019s great. Let\u2019s look.\u201d Skip whipped out his\nlaptop. \u201cTell me about the rash.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe says it hurts and it\u2019s on his rib area. Just started.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip typed and scrolled and frowned, then showed Blanche the\nscreen. \u201cDoes it look like this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, it\u2019s just on one side and doesn\u2019t have those black\nspots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip typed some more and scrolled. After a couple more tries\nhe closed the laptop and said, \u201cSorry. Sounds like he needs to see a doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah.\u201d Blanche shook her head again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, come this January you can get him and you on\nMedicaid. Idaho has expanded Medicaid so more people can have health\ninsurance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMedicaid? Really? But I\u2019m working.\u201d Blanche protested. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s based on how much you earn. Lots of folks don\u2019t get\ninsurance through their work and don\u2019t make enough to buy health insurance on\nthe state exchange.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah, that\u2019s us. I looked into that exchange thing a few\nyears ago but I didn\u2019t qualify. Made too little.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip frowned. \u201cBut this new lawsuit might throw all that out\nthe window. The Republicans want to get rid of Obamacare so they sued that it\nis unconstitutional.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blanche stared at him like he was speaking a foreign\nlanguage. \u201cI\u2019m sure glad you are paying such attention to this stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip got animated. \u201cYeah, the Republicans have fought\nObamacare for years now. They couldn\u2019t get it repealed in Congress, though\nthat\u2019s what Trump promised. Now they are about to get it over turned by a court\ndecision.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, I won\u2019t be getting health insurance in January?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip frowned. \u201cI don\u2019t know. Could be. Lots of things could\nchange.\u201d He tapped his computer. \u201cCome to think of it, I could lose my coverage\ntoo. I\u2019m still on my parent\u2019s health insurance coverage; that was part of\nObamacare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blanche looked at the young healthy man. \u201cWhy do you need\ninsurance? You\u2019re young.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip laughed. \u201cBlanche, everybody ought to have health\ninsurance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blanche shook her head and chopped some more celery. \u201cToo\nmany people think doctors or pills will solve all their problems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou got that right Blanche. But when people get really\nsick, they need insurance. I just read an article how most people go bankrupt\npaying for their cancer care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blanche frowned. Could Dennis have cancer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip hoisted his backpack. \u201cLet me know about your\ngrandson\u2019s rash. I\u2019m sure it\u2019ll be fine.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
