It was a rushed lunch since all the fraternities had gotten\ntogether, but Skip wanted to grab a sandwich before O-chem at 1:30. \u201cYou got\nany turkey?\u201d he asked Blanche, the cook. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey\u2019re all labeled out there, just look.\u201d She didn\u2019t roll\nher eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip got one with the white meat and dropped his satchel to\neat. Scooter high-fived him with a \u201cHaaayy\u201d and grabbed a pink meat sandwich.\n\u201cI love Blanche\u2019s ham sandwiches.\u201d And he plopped down next to Skip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, isn\u2019t that cool that the governor was a Phi Delt?\u201d\nScooter started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah, but he\u2019s a Republican.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat difference does that make? He\u2019s a bro!\u201d Another high\nfive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt least he wants to make Idaho a place we want to come\nback to.\u201d Skip offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah, and I heard he defended us from the initiative\nattack.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHuh?\u201d Skip asked through a mouthful of white bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah, didn\u2019t you know? All those Californians wanted to\nmake Idaho pass initiatives and he fought that off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip swallowed. \u201cI heard he vetoed the bill about initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah!\u201d Scooter did another high five. \u201cOur man! Phi Delt!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blanche came out. \u201cYou guys take another sandwich. They\ngoing to waste.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scooter grabbed another and said, \u201cAnd he said he really\nwants Idaho to be a place for us to work and raise our families. Ain\u2019t that\ncool?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSure,\u201d Skip agreed. He looked at the pile of sandwiches. \u201cI\njust wonder if I can make a living here in Idaho.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHey,\u201d Scooter frowned. \u201cJust get a job from the old man.\nThat\u2019s what I\u2019m going to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip paused. Scooter had never really learned much about his\nbro\u2019s; Skip decided to tell him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cScooter, my dad is dead. My mom is a school teacher and I\nwant to get into med school. Idaho has the lowest pay for doctors in the\ncountry and the hardest acceptance rate to med school.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scooter looked down. \u201cSorry man. That\u2019s tough. My old man\nhas a ranch, so that\u2019s what I\u2019ll be doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blanche brought over two paper plates of sandwiches. \u201cYou\nboys take these.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThanks Blanche.\u201d Skip offered. \u201cDid you get to hear the\nGovernor?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looked puzzled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe came to talk to all of us this morning. He told us how\nhe wants to make this state a place where we can raise our kids. Yeah, Brad\nLittle was a Phi Delt!\u201d Fist bump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blanche looked down. \u201cI was cooking for you all.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip asked, \u201cWhere are your kids Blanche?  Are they still in Idaho?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looked at him hard, then she looked at Scooter. \u201cYeah,\nyou Phi Delts are the ticket.\u201d And she turned away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she ambled back to the kitchen, Scooter murmured to Skip,\n\u201cHey man, don\u2019t ask her about her kids.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy not?\u201d Skip was blushing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019ve heard she\u2019s raising her grandkids. Something\nabout her daughter in prison or something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip looked down. Scooter grabbed his bag. \u201cGotta go, Poly\nSci at 1:30.\u201d He took his sandwiches and left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip picked up his satchel and went into the kitchen.\nBlanche was leaning over the sink. He put his hand on her shoulder. \u201cBlanche,\nI\u2019m sorry.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She let the water run over her hands and the pot she was\nwashing for a while then she turned to the young man. \u201cYou don\u2019t got nothing to\nbe sorry for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry if my question caused you any pain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blanche looked at the young man a long time. \u201cIt\u2019s OK.\u201d She\nsmiled. \u201cSure was nice you all got to hear from our governor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skip thought about what he\u2019d heard. The governor so full of\nconfidence and advice for the young fraternity and sorority members, about\ncoming back to Idaho and making the state better. It had felt inspirational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe he wants to make this state better.\u201d\n\nBlanche looked down. \u201cI just want my family to\nbe better.\u201d And she turned back to the pots in the sink.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
